Seems like so much is being affected by the down economy and recessions. What are some small businesses and home based businesses that can still thrive with the way things are?

The first things that come to mind are dressmaking/repairs and private tuition, but there are many businesses that don’t need an office or shop – plumber could work from home, only needs a phone so customers can contact him. Also barber, taxi driver, painter/decorator, ironing service, electrician, boiler maintenance, etc.
I know some people who keep a room at home to be their workplace – accountant, counsellor, music teacher, hairdresser, after-school childminder, etc. There could be dozens more. Any service you require to be done at your home (such as the painter/decorator mentioned) doesn’t really need a separate workplace, just a phone for contact and transport to bring him to you.
