Question by Erik-Guybrarian: Does anyone know about the quality and reliability of ZT Systems and/or Cisnet computers?
I am in the process of buying a computer for my home-based business. Should I be resigned to the fact that I will buy a new one in 3 years? Would a custom-built computer last longer?

I own an older Cisnet C-28 computer. It was a great deal — plenty of power for my needs at a great price, and I have had very few problems with it. I did, however, add extra RAM right out of the box as well as the SoundBlaster Live sound card and 40GB hard drive from my previous computer.
I purchased the computer about three years ago, and I am looking for a new computer, but only because I want to switch from a desktop system to a laptop. My Cisnet (which I’m using to write this response) should last for another three years or more with proper upgrades and maintenance. In fact, when I get my next machine, I plan on converting this one into a dedicated DVR box.
The computer still runs great, and my only gripes have been that support is limited — I can no longer find system specs for my model online, which is a pain when I try to shop for upgrades — and that the cooling fan on the power supply is one foot in the grave.
A custom-built computer would probably suit your particular needs best, as the hardware can be tailored to the type of tasks you’ll perform most. Unless, that is, you just need the computer for internet work and basic data processing via Word, Excel, etc.
However, custom-built machines can be more expensive. If you’re primarily going to be using the internet and MS Office-type applications, I’d stick with the Cisnet.
