Q&A: What are the best ways to prevent bloat/torsion in a 1yr old great dane?

Question by Jenn: What are the best ways to prevent bloat/torsion in a 1yr old great dane?
My dane is 1yr old, male, neutered. I just got him from a family who had to go to Iraq. This is my first Dane, however I do have extensive knowledge of dogs in general as I have been in the “Animal Business” for several years. Mostly training. I know this is the #1 killer of danes and want to prevent it. Is the prophylactic gastroplexy surgery worth putting him through?

Best answer:

Answer by libertydogtraining
1. Feed a high quality dog food.
2. Feed him with an elevated dog food/water pedestal.
3. Do not allow him to scarf down his food. If he does, place toys in his dish to make him slow down and work around the toys for his food.
4. After exercising/walking him, do not feed him or let him guzzle down water.

Good luck with your Great Dane! They are wonderful dogs!
