Question by volatile2280: How do I organize a murder mystery party at home?
I want to organize a murder mystery party at home, where guests come over and are given specific characters. Does anyone know how I could go about this? There’s kits and stuff online, but they’re all on sale, I’m looking for a free one, any ideas?

Write your own. It’s free, easy-ish to do, and you (knowing your guests better than most people) can give them characters that you wrote with them in mind.
Start with a setting, characters and why they’re all together. e.g. it’s Don Delfino’s birthday, but the gangster’s been found dead. All the guests have motives, from the money-hungry fifth wife to the bitter daughter. Setting is the Don’s restaurant. Characters are:
Lola Delfino: the Don’s fifth wife
Danny Delfino: the greedy son
Darla Delfino: the daughter cut off from the family fortune, etc.
Jimmy Jones: an infamous “businessman” and friend of the family.
Clues: gun, note from murderer threating the Don/ another character, etc.
Create a time line for the event e.g.
6.30 guests arrive
6.40 Jimmy welcomes everyone
6.45 the Don is shot (you could play a gunshot sound effect)
6.50 character finds first clue
On invitations/email/whatever set the mystery for the guests, give them their character and the character’s background, as well as the names and backgrounds of the other characters e.e.
It’s 20’s Chicago and business is booming. At least for Don Delfino. And hey, by the way, you’re been invited to his birthday. It’s the biggest night of the year. And Don wouldn’t want you to miss it. Hopefully he won’t either…
Your character is: Jimmy Jones
Your background: Even though you’ve been telling everyone you’ve been “doing business” in NY, you’ve actually been on the inside for the past 2 years. And it’s because the Don framed you. Hey, you didn’t actually think he’d take the fall for anything. Did you?
You could also plan finger food around the theme you choose, and get costumes if you want.
Good luck!
