I live in an apartment and I’m not sure if I can run a regular office type business there and get a basic business license. However if I have a online business for graphic designing & not expecting clients to come visit, can I still get a basic business license without a building address? If so how?

Tim,

Excellent question. Everything depends on your city, but generally speaking, you have to get permission from your landlord to have a business in an apartment. That’s usually not a problem when there’s no foot traffic.

Since your business would be online, you should be okay there.

Your business license will have your apartment address on it. However, if you have a “UPS Store” in your area, you can get an address there for just a few bucks per month. You can also, if you want to spend a little bit more, get a virtual office from a place like Da Vinci Virtual Offices (http://www.davincivirtual.com/) or Regus (http://www.regus.com/).

These types of places are pretty affordable, but if your business isn’t making a lot of money right away, you may just want to stick with the UPS Store solution.

Hope that helps.
