If you are not a major deptment store, has your profit increased by having an online business? Let’s say you would sell items at school, work, garage sales, to family and friends.. Was there a major difference?

Selling on line give you a web presence. Millions of people like to shop on-line. It depends on what you intend to sell.
You also have to draw traffic to your site to get noticed. Paid searches from Yahoo’s Overture and Google’s AdSence can help put you higher up on the ranking on sponsored searches but you pay for that per click. You can budget a daily amount so you don’t get surprised with ad fees.
In contrast, selling at garage sales, etc., you always get the bottom barrel buyers – you get less money.
Selling on-line works for you 24-7, even when you are asleep. You just have to have a site built, and promote it, tell people about it, blogs, put it on your busuiness card, etc.
I would maybe consider stat selling on ebay or Amazon, and see how that plays out. If you do well after a couple years, you can then develop a website and expand your on-line sales.
Good Luck!
