Different cities have different requirements and different industries have different requirements. I’m in Long Beach and know the rules are different than the City of LA.

Here goes the short list:
– Business licenses – if needed, you get it from your city
– Resellers permit (sales tax license) – if needed, is from the State Board of Equalization
– DBA – “doing business as” certification if you name is different than you offical name (John Smith, you don’t need a dba; john but no last name you do and any other “pretend” name, you do) = this is from the state but is gotten at the LA County Recorders office (multiple locations around LA)
– Tax ID / Employer ID # – if you want to use a number that is different than your SSN. From State Franchise Tax Board and Federal IRS

I feel like I have forgotten something but I can’t think of what it is…

In addition, you might need special things for your business. I own a clothing line and need a Garment Registration Certification from teh state Department of Labor (it’s so we don’t run a sweatshop). And most clothing lines also need a Health Dept Permit but Long Beach & one other city in the state don’t… who knows why?!?
