Is a small business owner’s accountant supposed to check an employee’s references?

Question by lovebird: Is a small business owner’s accountant supposed to check an employee’s references?
I just started working as an office manager for a small, home-based business. My employer also just hired an accountant who comes in a few times a week to help him with his books. He emailed me today asking for all of my contact info and references from the jobs on my resume. Is he, as the accountant, supposed to be looking at my resume and asking for/checking references? Isn’t it supposed to be my employer? Could it be that he knows that I’m also finishing my accounting degree and is looking for some ‘dirt’ to get me in trouble?

Did you claim you had finished your accounting degree?
